Loyalty Program - Earn & Redeem Points
How the points-based loyalty program works for in-person and online customers - earning points, viewing your balance, redeeming rewards, and saving a card for fast checkout.
Loyalty Program - Earn & Redeem Points
Some businesses on MemberZone run a points-based loyalty program for in-person and online customers. Every visit and every purchase earns you points, and you can redeem those points for discounts, free items, swag, or whatever rewards the business offers.
This is separate from being a club member:
- You can be a loyalty member only - earning points on each visit without joining a club
- You can be a club member only - getting your tier rewards automatically with no points involved
- Or you can be both - getting your tier rewards AND accumulating points on in-person spend
If you're already a club member at a business that runs a points program, the business may auto-enroll you so you don't miss out on points. Auto-enrollment is at the business's discretion and depends on their tier configuration.
Joining the Loyalty Program
There are several ways to join, depending on the business's setup:
1. Sign up at the business
The fastest way: just ask the staff to enroll you when you check out at the register. They'll grab your email or phone number and add you to the program. You'll get a welcome email shortly after.
2. Sign up online from the business's storefront
If the business has enabled public signup, you can join from their public profile page:
- Visit the business's MemberZone storefront (the URL the business shares with you)
- Click the Join Rewards button
- Enter your name, email, and (optionally) phone and birthday
- Click Sign Up
- Check your email for a magic-link sign-in
- Click the link to verify your email
After verification, you're enrolled. If the business requires a card on file (see below), you'll be guided through saving one before reaching your rewards page.
3. Sign up via club enrollment
If you're joining a club at a business that runs a points program and your tier participates in loyalty, you may be auto-enrolled at signup. You'll see a confirmation in your welcome email.
4. Sign up via online order
Some businesses auto-enroll customers who complete an online order. You'll see a notice on the order confirmation if this happens.
How Points Work
Earning Points
Points are earned on settled transactions at the business (and, for some businesses, online orders too). The exact earn rate is set by the business - typically something like "1 point per $1 spent". Points typically post a few minutes after your check is closed at the register.
You may also receive bonus points for:
- Signup bonus - A one-time grant when you first enroll (if the business offers it)
- Birthday bonus - An annual grant during your birthday window. The window length depends on the business - it might be the day-of, within a week, or your entire birthday month.
Viewing Your Balance
Your points balance lives on your Member Dashboard under Rewards:
- Path: Sign in, then click Rewards under Quick actions on My {offering} (for example My Clubs), or go to
/member/rewards - The Rewards page ("Your points and the rewards they unlock") lists every business where you're in its rewards program, with your current balance for each
- Click a business to open its rewards page, which shows:
- Current points balance
- Lifetime points earned
- Lifetime points redeemed
- Visit count
- A scannable Loyalty QR to use at the register
- Recent points ledger entries (more on this below)
The Points Ledger
Every change to your points balance is recorded as a ledger entry. Each entry shows:
| Type | What it means |
|---|---|
| Earn | Points earned from a settled transaction (you'll see the date and the dollar amount that drove the earn) |
| Signup Bonus | One-time grant when you joined |
| Birthday Bonus | Annual grant during your birthday window |
| Redemption | Points you spent on a reward |
| Reversal | A previous earn or redemption that was reversed (e.g., refunded transaction) |
| Adjustment | A manual change made by staff with a note explaining why |
| Expiration | Points that hit their expiration date and were removed |
The ledger gives you a complete history so you always know how your balance got to where it is.
Redeeming Points
Points are redeemed in person at the business through the business's POS system:
- Bring up your Loyalty QR (or your Check-in QR - either works) on your phone
- Show it to the staff at the register
- They'll see your balance and the rewards you can afford
- Pick a reward; staff applies it to your check
- Your points balance updates within a few minutes - refresh the loyalty page to see the new total
You don't have to "activate" rewards in the app. Staff handles the redemption when they ring you up.
Card on File for Fast In-Person Checkout
Some businesses let you save a card on file specifically for in-person pay-on-file checkouts - meaning staff can charge your saved card without you having to pull out your wallet. This is separate from the card you use for club billing.
Card-on-file policies
The business sets a policy for whether a card is required:
- Optional - You can save a card if you want, but it's not required to use the loyalty program
- Required - You must save a card before you can complete enrollment. MemberZone routes you to the card-saving page automatically after email verification.
- Disabled - Card-on-file isn't offered for this business
Adding or replacing a card
- From your Member Dashboard, open Rewards, click the business, then click Add (or Manage when a card is already saved) beside the card on file
- (Or follow the link from your enrollment confirmation email)
- Enter your card details on the secure Stripe form
- Click Save Card
Your card is now on file. Staff can charge it directly when you visit the business - just show your QR code.
Removing your card
On the same Manage Card page, click Remove Card. Your saved card is detached from your account. You can save a new one any time.
Email Magic Links
The loyalty program uses passwordless magic-link sign-ins for enrollment and login. Whenever you sign up, log in, or save a card, you'll get an email with a one-time link that signs you in automatically.
Important details about magic links:
- They expire 30 minutes after they're sent
- Each link is single-use - once you click it, it's invalidated
- If you request multiple links, only the most recent one works
- Rate limit: 3 requests per email every 15 minutes to prevent spam
If your link expired, just request a new one from the sign-up or login page.
Email Notifications & Communication Channels
When you enroll, you can choose how the business contacts you about your rewards:
- Email (default) - Receipts, balance updates, expiration warnings, birthday bonus alerts via email
- SMS - Same content delivered via text (only available if the business has SMS enabled)
You can change your preferred channel from the loyalty detail page → Settings.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I have to be a club member to earn points?
No. The loyalty program is open to anyone the business enrolls (or who self-enrolls publicly). Club membership is a separate thing - though some businesses auto-enroll their club members in loyalty, and some tiers participate in both at once.
Do my points expire?
It depends on the business. Many programs have an expiration policy (e.g., "points expire after 12 months of inactivity"), and you'll see an Expiration entry in your points history if any expire. Check the business's program details on your loyalty detail page for the specific rules.
Can I see how many points a reward costs before redeeming?
Yes - the loyalty detail page shows the rewards available at this business and the points cost for each. Staff also sees this in the POS so they can tell you what your balance unlocks.
What if a transaction is refunded after I earned points on it?
A Reversal entry is created automatically and your points are deducted by the same amount you originally earned. If you've already spent the points and your balance would go negative, the system handles the reconciliation - you may see your balance go to zero and a "deficit" tracked invisibly until you earn it back.
What if the business deletes my account?
Your loyalty account can be soft-deleted (status Deleted). When this happens, points and history are preserved internally but you can no longer earn or redeem. If you re-engage, the staff has to re-enroll you manually - auto-enrollment will not bring back a deleted account.
How is this different from my club tier rewards?
Tier rewards are rewards you get for being in a club at a particular tier (free items, automatic discounts, etc.). They're applied automatically when staff identifies you. Points/loyalty rewards are earned over time on every transaction and require an explicit redemption. See Rewards & Member Benefits for tier rewards.
