Kiosk Mode

Kiosk mode turns a tablet (or any browser) into a self-service signup station. Customers pick a plan, fill in their own details, answer your signup questions and pay with their card, without a staff member typing for them. Memberships created this way show the signup channel Kiosk.

The kiosk's wording, background and defaults are set under Settings > Kiosk (see Kiosk Settings).

Who can start a kiosk

Staff need the Start Kiosk permission, or Manage CRM, which also allows it. Both are limited to the locations the person's role covers: you can only start a kiosk at a location your role includes. See Team and Permissions.

Starting kiosk mode

  1. Open People > Start Kiosk (/hq/kiosk), or on People > Contacts choose Start kiosk from the More menu.
  2. The Start Kiosk page lists the clubs, memberships or programs customers can join: published ones with a plan open to new members. One limited to certain locations says "Only at ..." and is only offered there.
  3. Click Start kiosk mode. The Kiosk mode sidebar opens:
    • Location - where this tablet is. Only programs offered at that location can be sold.
    • Programs customers can join - all of them, or just some.
    • Credit signups to - a staff member credited with every signup on this tablet, or No one in particular.
    • Offer shipping - when off, everyone joining here picks up at this location.
    • Accept promo codes - adds a promo code field to the payment step.
    • Sign me out of this device - recommended: customers will be holding the tablet, and leaving yourself signed in leaves HQ one tap away.
  4. Click Start kiosk mode. The device switches to the kiosk's welcome screen.

The shipping, promo code and sign-out choices start from your defaults in Settings > Kiosk, and you can change them for each session.

What customers see

  1. The welcome screen, with your headline, subheadline, button ("Get started" unless you change it) and background.
  2. The plan they want, with its price and how often it's charged.
  3. Their details, and your signup questions.
  4. How they'll receive their items: pickup is the default. Shipping is offered only if the session allows it.
  5. Payment: their card, and a promo code field only when the session accepts promo codes. Promo codes are never offered for release programs.
  6. They agree to the terms and tap Join now.

A date of birth is asked only when the plan requires age verification, at the age that applies where they buy: the ship-to state or province for shipping, otherwise the pickup or kiosk location.

After joining they see "Welcome, {name}!", their program and plan, what was charged today (or when the first membership charge is), and your thank-you message. Done resets the tablet for the next customer. Cards are saved to your business's own Stripe account, just like an online signup.

Other screens

  • You're already a member - the email is already signed up. Nothing is charged, and a team member can help from there.
  • This kiosk has reached its signup limit - ask a team member to start a new kiosk session.
  • This kiosk session has ended - the session expired or was ended; ask a team member to start a new one.

Walking away

After 90 seconds without a touch, the tablet asks Still there? and, if no one answers within 15 seconds, clears what was entered and goes back to the welcome screen.

Session limits

A kiosk session lasts up to 14 hours (a full shift) and then ends on its own. One session takes at most 250 signups and 500 signup attempts (including declined cards); after that it ends and staff start a new one.

Leaving kiosk mode

On the tablet, press and hold your business name for 2 seconds, or on a keyboard press Cmd+Shift+K (Mac) or Ctrl+Shift+K (Windows). Confirm End kiosk mode?. The device goes to the sign-in page, so staff sign in again to use HQ.

Running kiosks and lost tablets

The Start Kiosk page lists Running kiosks at the locations you can start one: the location, who started it, how many signups it has taken, when it started and when it ends on its own.

If a tablet goes missing, click End session on it and confirm End this kiosk?. The tablet stops taking signups immediately. Members who already joined on it keep their memberships.
